Our silk wool contains 70% organic merino wool and 30% natural silk. The long-fibre, very fine quality merino wool comes from Argentina and Uruguay, the smooth silk from China.
Silk wool combines the properties of two wonderful natural fibres: the smoothness of silk and the warmth of wool. Both materials are good at balancing temperature differences: silk wool is cool in summer and warm in winter. Both silk and wool absorb moisture without feeling wet.
Silk wool is suitable for year-round use
Silk wool is a breathable and smooth underwear material.Thinner than merino wool, it’s perfect as a base layer in colder months, and great for year-round use if you tend to feel chilly.
During spring and autumn, it adds comfortable warmth for trips to the cottage, camping, or boating. In winter, silk wool provides cosy insulation under everyday or outerwear.
Many people also enjoy wearing lightweight and wonderfully soft silk wool when sleeping. Soft silk wool is suitable for most people with allergies and for those with sensitive skin, even for newborn babies.
No harmful chemicals
The skin is the largest organ in the human body and through its two-way pores, chemical particles, including those in clothing, may enter our bodies. Because the well-being of the skin, and therefore of the whole person, is important to us, we handle silk wool with care.
Natural white silk wool is undyed. Black silk wool is dyed with minimal environmental impact in a closed system using reactive dyes, so that the fibre reacts completely with the dye and leaves no residue. No chromium dyes or heavy metal salts are used in organic production. In addition, we avoid the use of moth protection treatments, which are harmful to humans and nature.
The plasma treatment allowed in organic production improves the durability of merino wool and silk wool and prevents shrinkage. The plasma treatment is completely chemical-free, and the wool is not coated with resin, as is the case with superwash treatment, for example.

The silk wool we use comes to Finland as yarn from our suppliers in Germany and Italy. Yarn is knitted for us by our long-term partner Orneule in Orivesi, Finland, an the knit is then finished with a soap wash to achieve its final dimensions and softness. From this silk wool knit, our professionals at Artjärvi craft garments and accessories for babies, children, and adults in our own sewing factory.
For us, every patch is valuable. When the material is cut, the patterns are placed in such a way that as little raw material is left over as possible. However, small patches are inevitably left over during the cutting phase of clothes manufacturing. White scraps are shredded and carded into wadding for our wool-filled bedding, all made in Finland. The coloured patches are further processed for industrial applications, such as absorbents or carpet underlays.

Discover our materials
The natural fibres we use in our garments, accessories and bedding - merino wool, silk, silk wool and cotton - are all certified organic. The raw materials come from our long-term and responsible suppliers, and to be certified they must not only care for nature, but also for the well-being of their workers.
Merino wool
Our mulesing-free merino wool comes from reliable suppliers in Argentina and Uruguay. Smooth and non-itchy merino wool is only available from certain sheep breeds and from the fine underwool of sheep.
Silk
We are proud that we were the first to introduce clothes made out of certified organic silk to the Nordic market. The silk we use comes from an organic silk farm in Sichuan province in central China, where we have also visited.
Wool fleece
Wool fleece is made of 100% organic merino wool. The merino wool knit is brushed on both sides to a downy softness, so it feels comfortable even on bare skin. Wool fleece is a microplastic-free alternative to traditional synthetic fleece.
Cotton
Cotton is cool and breathable. Thanks to its smooth texture, unbleached and undyed cotton is particularly suitable for people with allergies and other sensitivities. Cotton is highly resistant to abrasion and can be washed repeatedly, even at high temperatures. It also absorbs moisture well.
