Our defence system develops most effectively in early childhood, but regular exposure to nature helps maintain healthy and normal functioning of the defence system into adulthood. Exposure to nature needs to be regular and sufficient to support health. Exposure to nature can be increased through activities such as gardening, berry picking, mushroom picking and hiking in the forest. 

However, our busy lives and intense urbanisation affect our opportunities for regular contact with nature. In winter, natural microbes are covered by snow and ice, so even if you are out in nature, you cannot be exposed to them. We added the extract to underwear, as they come against bare skin, allowing for long-term and extensive exposure to nature's microbes, including in urban environments and when going into nature is not possible.

Products for the whole family

Our Metsä collection includes clothing and accessories for babies, children and adults. They are made from organic, undyed silk wool that feels luxuriously smooth and wonderfully warm. Metsä products are made in our own factory in Artjärvi, Finland.

Together with Uute Scientific Oy, we conducted a study to determine how effectively the bacterial strains from the microbial extract could be transferred to silk wool fabric and how long they would remain in the garment. At the beginning of the study, a shirt from the Metsä collection contained hundreds of bacterial species found in nature. After three washes, more than half of the original bacterial count was retained, and even after six washes, the product still contained small amounts of dozens of bacterial species. Thus, with proper care, the benefits of the forest extract are well maintained in the fabric, and the product's lifespan continues like that of other silk wool garments even after the extract has diminished.

Silk wool freshens up with airing and needs washing only rarely. Small stains should be washed locally. For Metsä products, we recommend gentle gentle hand washing with Sonett Wool and Silk Detergent.
