Finnish family business

As we open the door and step inside the lower floor of the Old Dairy, the room is filled with a soft steady whir, paced by a faster buzz, click and then another buzz. Some twenty seamstresses are working. This is where the heart of Ruskovilla is.

When Anneli Wahlsten and Mauno Mattsson founded Ruskovilla in the early 1980s, their principle was that clothes should be produced in a way that is least harmful to both human and environmental well-being. This same idea continues to guide our operations today. As a mark of high-quality Finnish manufacturing, our products have been awarded the Key Flag symbol.

Organic production provides a framework for the treatment of materials

For millennia, Mother Nature has been our main product developer, creating the properties that best suit each natural fibre for different uses. All the raw materials we use are certified organic. This means, for example, that the nutrient richness of the soil and the diversity of the ecosystem must be ensured through crop rotation and the avoidance of monoculture. The use of all chemicals and other harmful substances is very limited in the dyeing and processing stages of the raw materials, and strict guidelines also ensure socially just production. When you put on a Ruskovilla product, you can be sure that it has been produced in a responsible way that respects nature and people.

Our products are made by skilled professionals in Artjärvi, Finland

To guarantee high quality, we have never wanted to outsource our production. We pay our staff, all working at our own premises in Artjärvi, a monthly salary instead of the usual performance-based salary. This way everyone has enough time to pay attention to detail and quality of garments. This also reduces the workload and improves well-being. Our staff have flexible working hours, the work community is diverse and most enjoy their work until retirement age - and often even beyond.

Various groups isitors have the opportunity to come and see our production facilities by appointment, and we also open our doors a few times a year to anyone who is interested.

Every patch counts

The circular economy has guided our opertaions even before the term was coined. Because nature goes to such lengths to provide us with these precious fibres, we take great care in our planning to make the most of them.

In the cutting room, the patterns are put in place so that as little of the valuable raw material as possible is left over. Small pieces are used to make baby mittens, for example, and not even the smallest patches are thrown away. The undyed wool and silk wool scraps are carded to fill our bed linen. The dyed patches are used to make industrial carpets, craft yarns and craft supplies. For reuse, we are teamed with Finnish Laatupeite, Dafecor and Pirtin Kehräämö

The energy, packaging materials and logistics

In Artjärvi, our products are manufactured with 100% renewable energy. We use renewable geothermal energy to heat our production, storage and shop premises. LED lights for lighting and heat recovery for ventilation increase energy efficiency.

Our products are stored in their original product bags for test storage. Amerplast manufactures our product packaging from environmentally friendly Green PE material. Green PE is manufactured using ethanol, a by-product of sugar production. Product packaging can be returned to the plastic packaging collection point. We are members of the Finnish Packaging Recycling Ltd.

All the products we sell are stored and shipped from Artjärvi, Finland. Our domestic logistics partner is Posti, while our parcels are sent abroad by Posti, PostNord and DHL.

Extending the life cycle of clothing

By washing and maintaining natural fibres correctly, the life cycle of your clothes is extended and they will last for a long time. We have compiled comprehensive material-specific care instructions on our website to help you wash and care for your textiles.

We recommend Sonett detergents for washing, as they are ecological and biodegradable. Our range includes also several repair and patching products to extend the life of your products even further.

If necessary, for example, shirt cuffs or zippers can be easily replaced with intact ones. Outside the busiest periods, we also carry out repairs in our sewing workshop in Artjärvi. Ask our customer service for more information!

Carefully selected partners

We have visited several of our raw material suppliers and partners in China, New Zealand and elsewhere. Raw materials are mainly transported to us by land and sea.

A small proportion of our products, such as sheepskin rugs, silk bonnets, detergents and yoga mats, come from our reliable and long-term suppliers. We aim to favour products from other manufacturers that meet organic standards wherever possible. The country of manufacture and materials of all products are listed on the product page.
